The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has made several suggestions to promote tourism in the city. It is said that City Beautiful should learn from Singapore.

In the Vision for Chandigarh 2030 document prepared by UNDP, it has been suggested to make all tourist places zero waste spots on the lines of Singapore. It has been said that plastic should not be used at all in tourist places. One way or the other the water should be reused. Wet and dry waste should be segregated at the site itself. Shops can be opened at some fixed places to create a means of earning for the local people. Where paper bags, food joints, some cultural items etc. are sold.

Said that Chandigarh is a green city so tourism and environment should be linked. The city should be promoted as an adventure sports destination. Such spots should be made at many places where adventure sports can take place. It was also suggested to set up a museum of heritage furniture. Mentioned beautification of Sector-17, Martyr’s Memorial in the Capital Complex, Air Force Heritage Center etc.

That’s why Singapore is special for tourists
Tourism is a major industry in Singapore. More than one crore people reach here every year. The reason for this is that there are many facilities for tourists here. The transport system is very good and it covers almost all the tourist places there, which makes it easy for the tourists to move around. This includes the very popular Mass Rapid Transit system here. Shopping, as well as food and drink, are also specially promoted as an attraction for tourists, usually by the Singapore Tourism Board or other affiliated agencies. The Singapore Tourism Board organizes various events throughout the year to promote tourism. These include the Chingae Parade, the Singapore Arts Festival and the Singapore Garden Festival.

Most people come to see rock garden, administration is not serious about it
Many works are to be done in the third phase of Rock Garden. In 2008, it was decided to build Nek Chand Museum, which has not been built till date. Padmashree Nekchand’s son Anuj Saini told that in the year 2016-17, the administration started the work of the third phase but could complete only one doll museum. After that the work stopped.

Corona’s attack on tourism continues till now
Before Corona in the city, a total of one lakh 34 thousand tourists used to reach Chandigarh on an average every month, but now this number has reduced three times. The total number of tourists who reached 132569 in March 2019 has reduced to only 41 thousand in March 2022. Before Corona in the city, on an average, three and a half thousand foreign tourists used to reach the city every month, but now this number is close to 1000.
