The centenary celebrations of Walt Disney’s start-up Disney Studios kicked off with much fanfare at the D23 Expo in the US city of Anaheim, California, which began on Friday. New films and series from Disney, Pixar and Disney Animation Studios were announced throughout the day in different sessions of the first day. And, between these sessions, the company also veiled its ambitious plans regarding India. The most important thing in the announcement for the Indian OTT audience on Friday was the announcement of making a grand series on the mythological saga Mahabharata. Work on the script of the series has already started and the cast and technical team will be announced soon.
100 Years of Disney
The company, which started in 1923, organizes the D23 Expo every two years for the worldwide fans of Walt Disney’s films, TV and web series. The last event of this biennial event was held in the year 2019 and due to the Corona transition period, it could not be organized in the year 2021. There has been a lot of enthusiasm among the fans spread all over the world about this event being held after three years. The D23 Expo, which began on Friday at the convention center near Disneyland in Anaheim, saw a throng of people from 5 a.m. onwards. In this event, Disney executives share information about the company’s series and films to be released in the next two years among fans.
Disney’s focus on India
The most prominent session for the Indian audience on the first day of D23 was the Disney International Content and Operations session. In this session, Rebecca Campbell, Chairman of Disney’s International Content and Operations, detailed the operations of Disney’s television and OTT branches. Cambell said that about 700 million people in India watch the channels of Disney company’s TV brand Star every month. The number of Disney Plus Hotstar subscribers in the country has also reached 58 million. Referring to the entertainment content being made in nine Indian languages of India, he specially welcomed the Indian media team who arrived here and said that these people have reached here after traveling the longest distance.
Speaking on the occasion, Gaurav Banerjee, Head of TV and OTT content for Disney India announced his future plans to make a mega-budget web series on the mythological saga Mahabharat. Gaurav told that this series will be originally made in Hindi but it will be available in all Indian languages as well as foreign languages. The series will be jointly produced by Mythoverse, the company of producer Madhu Mantena and Allu Entertainment, the company of Allu Aravind. Madhu Mantena had also announced a few years ago to make a film ‘Draupadi’ with actress Deepika Padukone. It is believed that this film itself is now being developed as a web series and in this the entire story of Mahabharata will be told from Draupadi’s point of view.
karan johar new series ‘show time’
During the Disney International Content and Operation session of D23, Gaurav Banerjee also gave interesting information about Karan Johar’s superhit show ‘Koffee with Karan’. He told that the seventh season of this chat show, which is being hosted by Karan Johar, has become the most popular chat show ever seen on OTT. The eighth season of the show was also announced in the information released after the session. Apart from this, Karan Johar is also going to produce a new web series ‘Showtime’ for Disney Plus Hotstar. This series will show the story of the ongoing struggle between film families and artists from outside in the Hindi film world.
