IELTS Exam Racket: After a month-long investigation, the police in Gujarat’s Mehsana district has unearthed a racket that helped one score high marks in the International English Proficiency Test. Police said on Monday that the racket used to help ineligible students pass IELTS to travel to Canada on student visas and then enter the US illegally.
Mehsana Police has registered a case against 45 people and arrested three including a student from Surat in connection with the IELTS passing racket. IELTS is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for students and citizens of non-English speaking countries, with a good score required for admission to prestigious colleges in many countries.

Was caught while entering the US from Canada

The people who have been booked include the owner of a coaching class, the CEO of a private examination management and educational services company and about two dozen students, he said. The alleged racket has come to the fore after the case of six youths from Gujarat who were caught by US border officials in March while trying to enter the US from Canada, questions asked by US judge during court hearings I failed to respond.

The US Consulate General had demanded an investigation

All the six students from Gujarat who were arrested earlier are still in the US and working there. The inspector said that he is out on bail and cannot leave the country till the case against him is pending. Of these six students, four were from different parts of Mehsana district, two from Gandhinagar and Patan. The four students from Mehsana district have been identified as Dhruv Patel, Neil Patel, Urvish Patel and Sawan Patel. The Criminal Fraud Investigation Unit of the US Consulate General in Mumbai sent a mail to the Mehsana Police to conduct an investigation to find out how these four students from Mehsana got very high marks and which agency or agents were involved .

10 lakh to 20 lakh rupees were taken from the students

Inspector Bhavesh Rathod of Mehsana Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), who is leading the probe, said that Amit Chaudhary, the alleged mastermind of the racket, took Rs 10 lakh to 20 lakh from 21 students and some employees of Ahmedabad-based testing agency Planet EDU. Together they helped him to score 6 to 7 bands in the IELTS exam. An FIR has been registered at Mehsana ‘B’ Division Police Station against 45 people including Chaudhary for cheating (420), criminal breach of trust (406), forgery (465) and criminal conspiracy (120-B). Rathod said that Gokul Menon, his accomplice Fernandes Sawant and a student from Surat, Sandeep Patel, have been arrested.
