In fact, researchers from Gandhinagar, Gujarat are working on a non-laboratory based testing method that can detect the risk of heart disease 10 years in advance. For this a non laboratory based screening tool is being developed. In the first phase, its results have been found to be 85 percent accurate.

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) carried out this study with a grant from the Department of Health Research under the Union Health Ministry. In this, researchers have designed the Framingham Risk Assessment Tool. It has been approved in the US, Canada, Australia and European countries, but not in India yet.

Encouraging first phase results
Biomedical expert Dr. Komal Shah said, “Whenever we talk about heart diseases, the first thing people focus on is cholesterol, while cholesterol is not a major indicator of cardiovascular risks. We have developed a non-laboratory based Framingham risk assessment tool in the study, the first phase of which has very encouraging results.

Study done on 2100 people
According to Dr. Shah, about 2,100 people from Gujarat were studied. It examined these people using factors such as body mass index (BMI), age, gender, blood pressure, smoking and diabetes.

Dr. Komal Shah said that in a country with limited resources like India, the cases of heart-related diseases are increasing very fast. Due to this, the mortality rate has also increased among the patients and the cases of heart attack have also increased. Therefore mass monitoring of patients is very important. He said that an alternative is being explored for this monitoring. We are trying to make such a device, which does not require any laboratory or health workers to be trained.
