New government figures show that 5,164 cases of crimes against the country have been registered in the year 2021, including sedition, the Official Secrets Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 2021 on an average of 14 cases every day. According to the National Crime Records Bureau’s ‘Crime in India – 2021’ report, there was a decline in cases in 2021 as compared to 2020 and 2019, with 5,613 and 7,656 being registered. NCRB functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Apart from 5,164 such new cases, 8,600 cases pending since last year were investigated and three cases were reopened for investigation.

Total number of pending cases in 2021 13,767
The NCRB’s annual report shows that the total number of pending cases rose to 13,767 in 2021. Last year, 79.2 per cent of the total such cases were registered under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (4,089 cases), followed by 814 cases (15.8 per cent) under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. According to official data, the average chargesheet filing rate across the country in 2021 was 78 per cent. The report said that under the ‘crimes against the state’ category, Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum 1,862 cases in 2021, up from 2,217 in 2020 and 2,107 in 2019.

Tamil Nadu and these states after UP
UP is followed by Tamil Nadu (654), Assam (327), Jammu and Kashmir (313) and West Bengal (274), which have the highest number of crimes against the country. Delhi recorded 18 such cases in 2021. A total of 76 cases of sedition (under IPC 124A), 814 cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and 55 cases under the Official Secrets Act (OAS) were registered across India in 2021.

The NCRB data shows that maximum crimes against the country were registered under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (4,078 cases). It said the highest number of sedition cases were registered in Andhra Pradesh (29) followed by Manipur and Nagaland (7 each), Haryana (5), Delhi (4) and Uttar Pradesh and Assam (3 each). The highest number of UAPA cases were reported from Manipur (157), followed by Assam (95), Jharkhand (86), Uttar Pradesh (83), Jammu and Kashmir (28). Delhi recorded five UAPA cases in 2021.
