Chandrashekhar, an associate professor working in the psychology department of Jammu University, committed suicide by hanging himself in his office. An hour before the noose, the associate professor had received his suspension letter. This letter was written on behalf of the Registrar of Jammu University.

On September 1, 22 to 23 girl students of the department had filed a complaint against Associate Professor Chandrashekhar with the Dean Student Welfare that Chandrashekhar was sexually harassing her. Following the complaint, the matter was referred to the Jammu University Sexual Harassment Internal Complaints Committee for investigation.

On Wednesday, September 7 between 4 and 5 pm, an employee of the Jammu University registrar reached Chandrashekhar’s room with a letter of suspension, and after half an hour, Chandrashekhar locked the room from inside. After some time the said worker came to him again and saw that the room was locked from inside.

He gave this information to the registrar’s office. Soon after, university staff members reached the spot and knocked on the door. When the door was broken when no answer was received, Chandrashekhar was found hanging inside with a rope with a fan. The police have also recovered the mobile phone of the deceased from the spot, which has been confiscated at present.

Registrar offices were attached by banning educational activities

The Sexual Harassment Internal Complaints Committee of the university initiated an inquiry into the sexual harassment complaint against Associate Professor Chandrashekhar. In view of the investigation, the university administration issued a suspension order telling Chandrashekhar that in view of the grounds present in the complaint, he is prohibited from participating in the academic activities of the department. They are attached to the registrar’s office till the completion of the investigation. The statements of the girl students are recorded in the camera.
