Governor Ramesh Bais left for Delhi on Friday amid the ongoing suspense over the legislature of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. A day before this i.e. on Thursday itself, the UPA delegation met the Governor. The governor had assured him that he would take a decision in the matter in two days. Since then there is speculation that the Governor will clear all the doubts in the matter as soon as he returns from Delhi. However, Raj Bhavan sources said that they are an individual visit for medical check-up.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren held a high-level review meeting with ministers Banna Gupta, Badal Patralekh and senior officials regarding the assessment of drought in the state. If sources are to be believed, the politics of the state was discussed during this period.
Why the crisis on Hemant Soren’s legislature?
On February 12 this year, former Jharkhand Chief Minister and BJP leader Raghubar Das had claimed that the Chief Minister had misused the position. He used his influence to get approval for a stone quarry lease in his name in Ranchi last year. Which is a violation of the provisions of the Representation of the People Act.
The BJP complained about the matter to the governor and demanded cancellation of Soren’s assembly membership. After this the matter reached the Election Commission. After a two-month-long investigation, the Election Commission sent its report to the Governor on August 25. Since then there are speculations about Soren’s departure from the legislature.
What can happen if the Chief Minister leaves the Legislature?
- It is being claimed that Soren’s assembly membership will be cancelled. However, the Election Commission has not barred him from contesting elections. If these claims are true, then it is most likely that Soren resigns and takes oath again.
- If this happens, Hemant Soren will have to contest elections and become MLA again within six months. After Soren’s membership, his seat will be vacant. Elections on this will be held within six months. In such a situation, Soren can be re-elected on his seat. In this way he will remain the Chief Minister.
What if Soren was banned from contesting elections?
Soren will not be able to take oath again after leaving the post if Hemant Soren is banned from contesting elections along with leaving the legislature. In this situation, his party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Mahagathbandhan will have to choose a new leader. The new leader of the legislature party will take oath as the next chief minister of Jharkhand. After this, he has to prove his majority in the assembly.
