Former Sri Lankan Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa has also left the country. Media reports said that he has left for the US for medical treatment on Friday. A week ago, the Supreme Court allowed him to travel abroad till January 15 next year. The Daily Mirror Lanka newspaper quoted officials as saying that Basil Rajapaksa, younger brother of ousted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, left for Dubai on an Emirates flight from Katunayake airport, from where he would catch a connecting flight to the US.

Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court had given permission to go out
On September 2, a five-judge bench headed by Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Jayanta Jayasuriya allowed 71-year-old Basil to travel abroad for the region till January 15 next year. The Mirror reported that the Supreme Court made the order in relation to a fundamental rights petition filed by Sri Lankan swimmer and coach Julian Bolling, former Ceylon Chamber of Commerce president Chandra Jayaratne, Transparency International and Jehan Canaga Retna.

Basil was barred from going out in July
The petitioners are seeking an order to take legal action against Basil and his elder brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa for financial irregularities and mismanagement of Sri Lanka’s economy. In July, Basil was barred from leaving Sri Lanka at Bandaranaike International Airport here after protests by passengers and officials. Sri Lanka is going through its worst economic crisis due to severe shortage of foreign exchange. In April, Basil was forced to resign from the government led by his older brother.

Earlier this month, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was given special security for accommodation and a government bungalow on his return to Sri Lanka from Thailand. He had fled to the Maldives amid months of massive protests over the country’s worst economic crisis. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, 76, was also forced to resign in May amid anti-government protests in the country.
