The Supreme Court can announce the punishment against fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya in the contempt case on Monday. Mallya has been found guilty in a contempt case involving over Rs 9,000 crore bank loan default involving Kingfisher Airlines.
The apex court had reserved the judgment in March.
A bench of then Justice UU Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat had on March 10, 2022, reserved its order on the sentencing against Mallya in the contempt case and said the proceedings against him were at an impasse. The top court had heard senior advocate and amicus curiae Jaideep Gupta on various aspects related to the contempt law and punishment and gave one last chance to Mallya’s counsel Ankur Sehgal to file his written arguments on the quantum of punishment. The bench in its order had said that even though advocate Ankur Sehgal has expressed his inability to make the submissions, we grant him one more opportunity to file his submission with an advance copy to the amicus curiae by March 15, 2022. .
We are unable to argue our client in UK: Mallya’s lawyer
Mallya’s lawyer said that our client is in the UK and we are unable to have any kind of argument in the absence of any direction from our client. The bench had said that it has given several opportunities to Mallya to appear in person or through a lawyer and even gave specific directions in its final order dated November 30, 2021.
