Shankaracharya of Dwarka Peeth Swami Swaroopanand passed away today. Swami Swaroopanand’s age was 99 years. He breathed his last in Narsinghpur, Madhya Pradesh. Swami Swarupanand left home at a young age and came to Kashi and got the education of Vedas here. He also fought for the independence of the country and went to jail.

start at birth

Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati was born in Dighori village near Jabalpur in Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh. His parents named him Pothiram Upadhyay. At the age of nine, Swami Swaroopananda left home and started his spiritual journey. After visiting all the Hindu pilgrimage sites of the country, he reached Kashi (Varanasi). Here he received the education of Veda-Vedanga, Shastras and Dharma from Brahmalin Sri Swami Karpatri Maharaj.

It is the year 1942. Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati’s age was then only 19 years. At that time the freedom movement was going on in the whole country against the British. Swami Swaroopanand also participated in it. He campaigned against the British for independence. Then Swami Swaroopanand became famous as a revolutionary monk. For campaigning against the British, he had to first spend nine months in Varanasi jail and then six months in Madhya Pradesh jail. During this time he was also the president of Ram Rajya Parishad, the political party of Karpatri Maharaj.

Dandi became a monk in 1950, then got the title of Shankaracharya

In 1950, Swami Swaroopanand was made a Dandi ascetic. According to the scriptures, only a sannyasin can become a brahmin. The punishing sannyasin has to stay away from the worldly life. During that time, he had taken initiation from the Brahmalin Shankaracharya of Jyotishpeeth, Swami Brahmanand Saraswati, for penal-sannyasa. Since then he was recognized as Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. Swami Swaroopanand received the title of Shankaracharya in 1981.

Close to Gandhi family

Swami Swaroopanand was considered very close to the Nehru-Gandhi family. From Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have taken the blessings of Swami Swaroopanand. Often the Gandhi family used to go to Madhya Pradesh for the darshan of Swami Swaroopanand.
