hear the news

There was a film in the year 1970, in which the lead actor Rajesh Khanna is battling a serious illness, the doctor advises him to be admitted to the hospital, then Avinash (Rajesh Khanna) says- ‘ Doctor Saab, I don’t want to die before I die.’

This line fascinates me a lot, especially when I read or write about suicide cases in the news. The meaning of this line is that even though death is on the unshakable truth, who is there in this world who wants to die? Ask the patient who is undergoing treatment for cancer in the hospital, what is the cost of life? The person counting the last breath also wants, I wish to get two more moments. Then the big question is, what are the circumstances in which suicide is the only option left for a person? How serious would it be for a person who loves life to have thoughts of suicide?

today world suicide prevention day This special day is celebrated every year on 10 September with the goal of making people aware about preventing the increasing suicides around the world. Recently, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released the data and said that in the year 2021, more than 1.64 lakh people committed suicide in the country. On an average about 450 suicides per day or about 18 cases every hour. These figures have increased in the year 2020-21 compared to the years before the Corona epidemic. This is certainly very serious, with the increasing cases of suicide, its factors need to be discussed seriously. Human nature is very sensitive about some subjects. We should always look happy, people think well of us, we should never be weak, we keep doing all such efforts continuously, but is it really possible to keep everything as you think? You will ask yourself for the answer, every time you will hear ‘No’. But when this ‘no’ starts becoming more effective then its effect can affect our mind negatively.

If you go through all the books on mental health, there is a very effective message in the main points of its essence, which needs to be seriously considered. The number of books I have read, the number of experts I have spoken to, and my understanding of how to maintain mental health, is summed up:

For example, if you are crying, feeling happy, angry or have a heart to say something, then these feelings should be transmitted appropriately. If you are not able to do this then it is possible that it can give rise to disorders like stress-anxiety. These disorders are at risk of becoming severe over time, being considered one of the leading causes of increasing suicides.

Many celebrities also admitted to having thoughts of suicide

Recently in an interview with actress Deepika Padukone revealed that there was a time when she was suffering from severe depression, so severe that she even attempted suicide.

Deepika told in the interview, even in the better days of her career, she was a victim of depression, since everything was going well, there was no obvious reason for which she could realize the seriousness of it. She says-

Deepika says, ‘What answer would I give them, because actually I did not even know much about what was happening with me, yes everything seemed empty. Mother understood my problems, took me to the specialist, prescribed medicines. In the end, she says – Mental illness is seen differently in our society, it was also a reason for me to fear what people would think?

Not only Deepika, actor Mithun Chakraborty, Bigg Boss season 14 winner Rubina Dilaik, film Jersey actress Mrunal Thakur, Ileana D’Cruz, Urfi Javed have also admitted in interviews that at one point of their life they too have to commit suicide. The thoughts were disturbing, or they made suicide attempts. Two important things emerge from this confession.

  • first- You may be smiling and smiling in front of the world, but you may be carrying a lot of pain behind it, which is very important to recognize in time and find ways to prevent it.
  • another- As human beings, we should take care of the mood of the people around us, respect them. If you think someone is mentally disturbed, they should be helped as much as possible. By doing this we might be able to prevent a possible suicide.
suicidal thoughts, an indicator of a serious condition

From the very first thought that comes to our mind as soon as we open our eyes in the morning till the last seconds of falling asleep at night, we keep churning about how we can keep our life better. Meaning- life is most precious to us.

I was reading a book of spirituality recently, in one part of it, a part of the dialogue between Yamraj and the man of the last moments of life impressed me a lot. It also shows the importance of life to us.

The purpose of mentioning this dialogue here was to throw light on the value of life. When life is so precious, think about it, would it be so easy to try to end life by committing suicide? How frightening would that state of mind be, to the core?

But suicide can be prevented. If we start trying to understand the mood of the people around us with ease and seriousness. If everyone gets along with someone the way Deepika got her mother’s support on time, then surely a precious life can be saved. And believe me, if you succeed in preventing any suicide, then it will make you feel such happiness which is unimaginable.

horrifying suicide statistics

If we look at the statistics, it is known that every year around 8 lakh people commit suicide around the world. 139,123 Indians committed suicide in the year 2019, this year the national suicide rate was 10.4 (calculated per lakh population). According to the World Health Organisation, suicide is an emerging and serious public health problem in India. These figures clearly show that these 8 lakh people did not find someone on time who could help them to change their negative thoughts.

Mental health is being talked about easily in the country in the last few years, it is definitely a necessary and commendable initiative, but the worrying thing is that till now there is no policy regarding suicide prevention in the country. Taking an important initiative, just a day before the World Suicide Prevention Day 2022 (9 September 2022), the Madhya Pradesh government has announced the preparation of a strategy document for suicide prevention. It will be the first state in the country to do so. Certainly this initiative is welcome.

What do experts say about suicide prevention?

Experts say – You cannot guess what is going on in someone’s mind by looking at them, but if there is anything unexpected in someone’s behavior, then definitely talk about it, maybe with your help, it will be strengthened. Meet and you can become an instrument to prevent suicide.

Take social media soldiers seriously

Showing awareness on social media is also an essential topic for suicide prevention, meaning there is a need to avoid glorifying suicide in any way directly or indirectly. While sharing photos or methods of suicide, definitely think, are we not knowingly or unknowingly telling any person the path of such an act? Also avoid giving overly emotional reactions to the victim. There is a need for sensitivity regarding this on social media as well as socially.

Mental health problem is a serious matter, instead of being judgmental towards the victims, try to reduce their problems. There is great peace of mind after helping others and if you are helping someone who is troubled by suicidal thoughts, believe me the joy it brings will be incomparable.

I want to share one thing with you at the end of this article- I myself have been a victim of severe depression at one time, suicidal thoughts were also there. Experts met on time, treatment was done, everything went well with time. Now when I look back on those days, I come to a conclusion-

Say yes to life Say Yes To Life
